Who do you say I am?

And you, said Jesus, who do you say I am? Simon Peter spoke up, You are the Christ, the son of the living God. Jesus said, Blessed are you Simon, for it was not flesh and blood that revealed that to you but my Father in heaven. And I say to you, You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church. Mt 16:15-16

This exchange between Jesus and Peter strikes me as intimate and meaningful. There is a beautiful reciprocity in the way Peter names Jesus and then Jesus names Peter. But these are not just the nicknames of friends, rather the name proclaims the vocation of each one. Jesus is the Messiah and son of God, sent to redeem the world. And Peter is the rock of the Church, sent to preach Jesus to the world. So each one is in a sense calling forth the vocation of the other, making it clear for those who follow.

This exchange speaks to me of the trust and genuine respect between Jesus and Peter. Jesus was fully human and had real human friendship with his disciples.
