In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep, and God’s spirit hovered over the water. God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light. (Genesis 1:1-3)

Cosmologists now think that light originated about 250,000 years after the big bang, that is over 13 billion years ago. This was before atoms existed and long before stars, which probably began 1.6 million years after the big bang. The majority of matter in the universe is considered to be ‘dark matter’ which cannot be seen because it does not radiate or reflect light. So for 250,000 years only dark matter existed :
Darkness was on the face of the deep, and God said, ‘Let there be Light’, and there was light.
