2nd February is the ancient celebration of Candlemas, going back to the early 4th century, when we light candles and celebrate Jesus being presented in the Temple in Jerusalem, and recognised by Simeon as the Light to enlighten all peoples.
We need physical light to see and to live. Interestingly enough, even in our scientifically brilliant age light remains something of a mystery. It has qualities of both energy and of matter.
We also need spiritual light, the light of God to enlighten the confusion of our world and to lead us to the truth. The light of faith is also something of a mystery, it is unquantifiable and difficult to pin down, yet at the same time faith and light are as simple as the sunrise.
