'And we are put on earth a little space
That we may learn to bear the beams of Love'
This quote from one of William Blake’s poems speaks to me of what prayer and the contemplative life is about. It speaks about both the brightness and the heaviness of God’s Love. It shows the beauty and attractiveness of God, and hints at the weakness of human nature that has to learn to bear the beams of Love. It speaks about persisting in seeking God who is love and learning to live in that presence.
I have always found prayer both essential and difficult. I once wrote a very short poem about it.
In Your Presence
I kneel and pray
To You O God
How long can I stay?
How long can I stay away?
I really believe in the value of prayer. Only prayer can change the human heart. Looking at the world today, humanity needs a change of heart.
